Given the success of Season 1 Star Trek Discovery Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman and Patrick Stewart surprised fans Saturday at the Star Trek Las Vegas Convention with the news that Patrick will be returning to the iconic role of Picard for a new Star Trek series coming to CBS! Patrick Stewart will reprise his iconic role of Jean-Luc Picard in a new "Star Trek" series. This being a definite revival of Star Trek Universe and beloved characters of the early 90s!

So far we know little about the details and is a unnamed series that will explore the "next chapter" of Picard's life. It is worth mentioning and surmising that the return of Picard could be a the modern film/show motif of a "send-off." Star Wars, Blade Runner, Indiana Jones, and other pop-culture film/show franchises have adopted this formula. Perhaps we will see Picard take-over the Enterprise (most preferred theory) or, send off to a new crew of a possible Enterprise- F.  Regardless, for those new to the franchise, Stewart played the Enterprise captain in the TV series "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987-94), the last series that Gene Roddenberry himself at the time promoted. It is worth mentioning that Gene Roddenberry disliked the casting of Patrick Stewart and stated before the shows production" I don't want a bald captain!" Well 31 years later and with several feature films, the bald Jean-Luc Picard is among the most respected and feared leaders of the Federation. He last appeared in the role in the movie "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002. Stewart, who will also be an executive producer of the show, described it is an "unexpected but delightful surprise" to reprise the role after, he thought, it had "run its natural course."

To tie the Star Trek Universe all in, Star Trek Discovery Season 1 is currently streaming on CBS All Access. I highly recommend watching the series as it is canon and holds dear to the universe developed by Gene Roddenberry.

Lastly, it is also worth mentioning that Jonathan Frakes, Jean-Luc's Number 1 and Commander of the Enterprise, also lent his talents onto Star Trek Discovery. Jonathan Frakes directed the 10th episode (“Despite Yourself”) of the first season of Star Trek: Discovery and it turns out he will be returning for the second season!
